FAQ
Discover answers to common questions about our custom Magic the Gathering alters and commission process below.
What is a card alter?
A card alter is a hand-painted or hand-illustrated modification of an official Magic: The Gathering card. Alters can range from subtle border extensions to full-art transformations while keeping the original card recognizable and playable.
Are altered cards tournament legal?
It depends. Many alters are legal in casual play, Commander, and some sanctioned events, but tournament legality is always at the head judge’s discretion. We cannot guarantee tournament legality—please check with your local judge before using altered cards in competitive play.
Do you use real Magic cards?
Yes. All alters are done on authentic Magic: The Gathering cards unless otherwise specified. If you would like me to work on a card you already own, you may mail it to us.
Can you alter a proxy or blank card?
Yes! If you’d prefer not to alter a real card, we're happy to work on proxies, tokens, or blank cards. Just let me know your preference when ordering.
What kind of alters do you offer?
We offer:
-
Border extensions
-
Full-art alters
-
Themed alters (color, plane, or character-inspired)
-
Minimalist or cosmetic touch-ups
-
Custom concepts based on your ideas
If you have something specific in mind, feel free to ask!
How long does an alter take?
Turnaround time varies, but most alters take 1–2 weeks once work begins. Rush orders may be available for an additional fee.
Can I request copyrighted characters or themes?
We can create inspired-by designs, but we cannot copy official artwork from other franchises exactly. All alters are original artwork interpretations.
Will the card still be playable?
Yes—my goal is always to maintain card readability and integrity. Mana cost, name, and text box visibility can be preserved upon request.
What materials do you use?
I use professional-grade acrylic paints and sealants designed to protect the card while minimizing thickness and warping.
Do you accept returns or refunds?
Because each alter is custom-made, all sales are final unless the card is damaged in transit.
